After three months travelling around the amazing South East Asia and being in a few of the islands on the Gulf of Thailand, I thought it was going to be hard to get impressed once again. But Koh Rong is totally different than the other islands I’ve seen before and I really enjoyed my time there.

So if you are wondering about the differences between the two main touristic islands of Cambodia, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem, this is what my experience was like.

Koh Rong is located about 22 kilometres west of Sihanoukville in the Gulf of Thailand. It has 14 km long and 8 km at its widest point. To get there, you can take a slow boat that goes just once a day early in the morning or one of the fast boats which takes only 45 min and cost 18-20 USD return, from Sihanoukville. The fast boat was quite an adventure because of the weather. The rocking ferry was a picturesque scene: some of the passengers had to fight over the only available toilet or had to make use of the bags provided right in front of the seat.

 

Koh Rong

As you can tell when you arrive at this beautiful island, you won’t have any trouble to find a place to stay so don’t worry too much about bookings, there are options for every taste and budget. In my case, I chose “Police Beach” because I liked the vibe of the place, loved their prices and it has the sea right in front all for yourself. Unfortunately, I had two hours of sun for the three days I stayed there, which is actually not a problem when you experience this chilled the temperature a little bit and get the mosquitoes away for a while.

I went for a walk around the island, there is a cool path along the tropical jungle and it gives you access to some of the other beaches at the island. Apart from the grey clouds full of rain, the white sand and crystalline water of the sea will tempt you to go in even if the weather is not the best.

This is also known as being the party island. There are a few big pubs/restaurants that are on everyday, so if this is what you are after, do not worry, you’ll find it here. But also, if you’re seeking a relaxing holiday time, the island is pretty big and you won’t have any trouble to chill and everything closes surprisingly early.

Koh Rong Samloem

To cross from one island to the other, you can jump on a slow boat with cost of 5 USD (you can use your ticket return to Sihanoukville from any of the two islands). And the big massive difference between these two is the level of development. This island is much smaller, less touristic, there is no shops, and way less choice for accommodation, but there is again options for everyone.

After the recommendation of a couple of friends that went before me, I booked three nights in “Mad Monkey Backpackers Resort”. It is located in an incredible private beach, you’ll find here the cliché paradise beach. As a private beach, you’ll find everything you need in here including food, bar and the entertainment provided by fire shows at night, pizza nights, drinking games and the best thing of all… The amazing fluorescent plankton that you can see just from two meter in the shore.
Another particular thing of this place, THERE IS NO WIFI. Which is really really appreciated, because it creates a nice atmosphere to make new friends while you are stuck in paradise.

All of this being said, I can’t recommend you one island instead of the other, they are both truly amazing and worth a visit for sure.

I hope you like these islands as much as I do, try to go as soon as possible before it gets more developed and take care of your rubbish!

Koh Rong y Koh Rong Samloem

Después de tres meses viajando por el increíble Sudeste asiático y de haber estado en algunas islas del Golfo de Tailandia, pensaba que iba a ser muy difícil impresionarme. Pero Koh Rong es totalmente distinta del resto de islas en las que he estado antes y disfruté mucho de mi estadía aquí.

Koh Rong está a unos 22 kilómetros al Oeste de Sihanoukville, en el Golfo de Tailandia. Tiene unos 14 km de largo y otros 8 km de ancho en su punto más amplio. Para llegar hasta la isla, se puede tomar un ferry lento que sólo sale temprano una vez al día o uno rápido que solo tarda 45 minutos y cuesta 18-20 dólares ida y vuelta.
El ferry fue toda una aventura debido al tiempo, con el movimiento, varios de los pasajeros tuvieron que competir por el único baño disponible o simplemente hacer uso de las bolsas al sentirse enfermos.

Bueno, si te estás preguntando sobre las diferencias entre las dos principales islas turísticas de Camboya, Koh Rong y Koh Rong Samloem, ésta fue mi experiencia.

 

Koh Rong

Como verás cuando llegues a esta isla paradisíaca, no existe ningún problema con el alojamiento así que no te preocupes demasiado por las reservas. Hay opciones para todos los gustos y presupuestos. En mi caso, yo elegí Police Beach porque me gustó el ambiente del sitio, me encantaron los precios, sumado al hecho de estar justo al frente de la playa.
Lo único malo, tuve sólo dos horas de sol durante los tres días que estuve ahí, pero en realidad es parte de la experiencia (sobretodo en temporada de lluvias) y si tienes en consideración que la temperatura se hace más agradable y te despides un rato de los desagradables mosquitos, estoy seguro que disfrutaras de cualquier forma.

Fui a dar un paseo por la isla, hay un camino muy bonito a través de la selva tropical que además te da acceso a otras playas buenísimas. Aparte de las nubes grises llenas de lluvia, la arena blanca y el agua cristalina te tentará a ir por un baño aunque el clima no sea el mejor.

Koh Rong tiene fama de ser la isla de la fiesta. Hay algunos pubs/restaurantes abiertos todos los días, así que si esto es lo que buscas, no te preocupes, ahí lo encontrarás. Pero si lo que te buscas son unas vacaciones relajadas, la isla es bastante grande asi que no tendrás ningún problema. Además, sorprendentemente, todo cierra muy temprano.

 

Koh Rong Samloem

Para cruzar de una isla a otra, puedes tomar un ferry de los lentos por 5USD (puedes usar tu ticket de vuelta a Sihanoukville desde cualquiera de las dos islas). La gran diferencia entre las dos islas es el nivel de desarrollo. Samloem es mucho más pequeña, menos turística no hay tiendas, y existe mucha menos oferta de alojamiento, pero sigue habiendo opciones para todo los gustos.

Seguí la recomendación de unos amigos que habían estado antes, y me quedé en “Mad Monkey Backpackers Resort”. Está situado en una increíble playa privada, lo más parecido al cliché de la playa paradisíaca. Al ser privada, encontrarás todo lo que necesitas ahí: comida, bar y entretenimiento por todos lados. Shows nocturnos, noches de pizza, juegos y lo major de todo… el plankton fluorescente que podrás ver de noche a solo dos metros de la orilla.
Otra cosa particular de esta isla es que NO HAY WIFI. Lo cual es un gusto, porque invita a la gente a sociabilizar mientras estás atrapado en el paraíso.

Dicho esto, no puedo recomendar una isla sobre la otra, las dos son increíbles, distintas y merecen 100% la pena ir a visitar.
Espero que les gusten tanto como a mi. Mi recomendación es ir lo más pronto posible para que puedan disfrutar de estos lugares antes que siga aumentando el turismo y su desarrollo y no olviden recoger su basura!
